CV–2B CARIBOU |
| The DeHavilland CV–2 CARIBOU entered U.S. Army service in January, 1961 as a front line medium transport capable of carrying 6000 + pounds of cargo or 32 combat equipped soldiers into unimproved and short fields. The Caribou proved it’s impressive capabilities during service in Vietnam from 1962 to 1971 when it was the main source of resupply at numerous, remote military locations throughout Vietnam and Southeast Asia . In 1967, all Army Caribous were turned over to the U.S. Air Force under terms of an inter–service agreement. The Air Force redesignated the aircraft as a CV–7 and operated the aircraft until 1982 in active, reserve, and guard units. In the early 1980’s, 20 Caribous were returned to Army National Guard duty where they served until the early 1990’s. The Caribou is the largest fixed–wing aircraft operated by the U.S. Army in its regular aircraft inventory. |
