OH–23D RAVEN The OH–23D RAVEN was the fourth variant of this helicopter type to be purchased by the Army. A total of 1800 RAVENS were purchased from the Hiller Helicopter Company of Palo Alto, CA with 438 of these helicopters being D models. The OH–23D was powered by a 250 hp Lycoming engine and featured a new rotor and transmission system. Deliveries of the D model began in 1956 with the majority of these aircraft serving as the Army’s primary basic helicopter trainer until the mid–1960’s. The H–23 RAVEN served the Army well in a variety of roles, and saw extensive combat duty in both Korea and Vietnam. |

U.S. Army Primary Helicopter School Fort Wolters, Mineral Wells, Texas
Manufactured (Hiller Serial No. 983) and delivered to the U.S. Army on September 3, 1957, the aircraft served most of it’s military service as a primary helicopter trainer at the Army’s Primary Helicopter School located at Fort Wolters, Mineral Springs, Texas. The aircraft left military service in January, 1973 and has had multiple civilian owners until purchased by AAHF member Don Oglesby. Don served as a contract civilian helicopter instructor pilot at Fort Wolters during the time this aircraft operated at the same location. Don and Joe Wade, an Alabama Army National Guard Master Aviator, totally restored the aircraft to a "zero time" condition and operate the aircraft for the benefit of the AAHF. Joe Wade also began his Army helicopter experience receiving his primary helicopter training in the OH–23D at Fort Wolters. |
