T-42A

Cochise

Trainer and Utility Airplane

In February 1965 Beech’s Baron was selected as the Army’s new twin–engine instrument and multi–engine transition trainer. The Army purchase 120 machines and in 1971 ordered 5 more examples for delivery to Turkey under the Military Assistance Program (MAP). The T–42A was a low–wing twin–engine cabin monoplane developed from beech’s earlier Model D95A Travel Air. The Cochise is an all–metal construction and has fully retractable landing gear. Accommodation for up to three persons in addition to the pilot was standard, but the T–42s used as instrument trainers normally only carried two students in addition to the instructor pilot. Although initially procured for use primarily as a trainer, the T–42A saw widespread service as a general light utility transport. This aircraft was given the colemill modification replacing the original powerplants with IO–550s to improve aircraft performance, increase engine power and improve fuel consumption. T–42s remained in the Army reserve and the Army National Guard inventories into the early 1990s.
